What do you get from a former funk rock frontman, who later studied jazz vocals, and became a huge Prince fan? Introducing: vouga , the musical project of Samuel Vouga, a Swiss singer, songwriter, and producer who has spent most of his life moving around the world.
vouga recently released their debut single, “Drifting Away,” which is heavy on synth-pop/rock vibes with touches of modern French electronic music — think of a Kitsuné record label release from the 80s.
“Now I just make music that I want to hear, and it turns out that it involves a lot of synths . My love of synths came from listening to a lot of Prince,” vouga explains. “Of course, I’m also influenced by what’s going on around me and because of that, I got into dance and electronic music which also had a big impact on the music I make.”
The initial idea for the song “Drifting Away” came in late 2020, when the pandemic hit the world. Vouga explained that the song was created naturally and spontaneously, without worrying about the end result. Thus, the musical arrangement could truly reflect what was inside him at that time.
Meanwhile, in the context of the lyrics, the song contains metaphors to describe the feelings of helplessness and aimlessness that vouga personally experienced. As stated in the refrain : " Drifting away on an empty shell / This is the story that we never tell / Drifting away cause it hurts like hell ."
vouga himself could be considered a one-man band , at least in the studio. He writes and develops all of his own songs, something he admits he needs to do to keep himself sane.
If all goes well, vouga will perform more often and release more songs. He said: “I have a lot of songs. I feel like it’s my duty to release them and take care of them so they can reach the people who need them.”
“It may be a high-risk thing to try, but the only way to know the outcome is to do it!” Vouga continued enthusiastically.
